Before you buy

“Malaysian sal” (also written “Malaysian saal”) is a trade name for imported wood. Indian forestry research links it to Meranti, for example the Yellow Meranti group.
It is not the same as desi sal (sakhu, Shorea robusta), and kapur (“Kapoor sal”) is a separate wood again.
Get the timber group or species, origin, grade and finished sizes written on the quotation.

Can a jali door hang on this chaukhat too?

No. A single rebate has a step on one side only, for one door. For a jali (mesh) door in front of the main door, the chaukhat needs a double rebate: the Malaysian sal chaukhat with a double rebate is from ₹160.

How many running ft do I need?

Add the two sides and the top of the door opening: a 7 × 3 ft door needs 7 + 7 + 3 = 17 running ft. Send us the door height and width and we confirm the exact length and price.

Single or double rebate: which do I need?

A single rebate frame has a step on one side for one door. A double rebate frame has steps on both sides, so a second shutter such as a jali door can be hung on the same chaukhat. If you are not sure, tell us how the doorway will be used and we will suggest one.

What does "4 × 2.5 inch section" mean?

It is the size of the wood the chaukhat is made from: a 4 × 2.5 inch cross-section. This chaukhat comes in 4 × 2.5, 5 × 2.5 inch sections; a bigger section is stronger and suits a heavier door. It is not the size of the door opening, so also tell us the door height and width.

Is Malaysian sal good for chaukhat?

It can be a good choice once the actual wood is identified and suits the frame. Sound sections, seasoning, sizes and fixing details all have to be checked together.

Is a door included?

No. The chaukhat is the frame only. Doors are separate items; our teak doors are listed on this page.

Do you fit the chaukhat?

Usually your mason or construction workers fix it while the house is being built. We can fit it on request for a small charge. Fitting is free for our doors and windows.

What should I check in a chaukhat?

That it is straight, with no bend or twist along its length, and has no deep cracks near the joints and fixing points. Know the finished size, not just the rough size, and ask how the bottom will be protected from damp and deemak.
