Kapoor Sal Chaukhat (Door Frame) – Double Rebate

Kapoor sal (kapur) chaukhat with a double rebate, for a main door and a jali door. 5 × 2.5 to 6 × 2.5 inch wood sections. Double rebate: two steps cut in the frame, so you can fit a main door and a jali (mesh) door on the same chaukhat. Kapur is a reddish, straight-grained hardwood from South-East Asia. It is not the same tree as Indian sal (sakhu).

This chaukhat has a double rebate: a step on both sides of the frame, so a jali (mesh) door can hang in front of the main door to let air in and keep mosquitoes out. For a door with no jali door, the Kapoor sal (kapur) chaukhat with a single rebate is from ₹191 per running ft.

About Kapoor sal (kapur)

Reddish, straight-grained hardwood, popular for chaukhat. It is not the same tree as Indian sal; check seasoning and finished size.

Before you buy

“Kapoor sal” is a market name. Ask the seller to write the actual wood (kapur, Dryobalanops) on the quotation.
Kapur is not the same as desi sal (sakhu, Shorea robusta), even though both names have “sal” in them.
Kapur is not termite-resistant. Plan deemak protection at the site and keep the frame away from damp.

Questions about this chaukhat

What hangs on a double rebate chaukhat?

The main door on one side and a second shutter, such as a jali (mesh) door, on the other. If you want the jali door, tell us at the start so both are planned together.

How many running ft do I need?

Add the two sides and the top of the door opening: a 7 × 3 ft door needs 7 + 7 + 3 = 17 running ft. Send us the door height and width and we confirm the exact length and price.

Single or double rebate: which do I need?

A single rebate frame has a step on one side for one door. A double rebate frame has steps on both sides, so a second shutter such as a jali door can be hung on the same chaukhat. If you are not sure, tell us how the doorway will be used and we will suggest one.

What does "5 × 2.5 inch section" mean?

It is the size of the wood the chaukhat is made from: a 5 × 2.5 inch cross-section. This chaukhat comes in 5 × 2.5, 6 × 2.5 inch sections; a bigger section is stronger and suits a heavier door. It is not the size of the door opening, so also tell us the door height and width.

Is Kapoor sal the same as desi sal (sakhu)?

No. Indian sal (sakhu) is Shorea robusta. Kapur is Dryobalanops timber.

Is a door included?

No. The chaukhat is the frame only. Doors are separate items; our teak doors are listed on this page.

Do you fit the chaukhat?

Usually your mason or construction workers fix it while the house is being built. We can fit it on request for a small charge. Fitting is free for our doors and windows.

What should I check in a chaukhat?

That it is straight, with no bend or twist along its length, and has no deep cracks near the joints and fixing points. Know the finished size, not just the rough size, and ask how the bottom will be protected from damp and deemak.
