Matching doors, windows and chaukhats across the whole house

Your doors do not all need to be the same. Pick a few things to keep common, like the polish shade and panel style, and plan each opening on its own.

In short

  • Walk through the house and note which doors and windows are seen together.
  • Keep two or three things common: polish shade, panel style, hardware colour, top line.
  • Let the main door stand out, and keep room doors simpler.
  • Different woods take polish differently. Ask for samples if you mix woods.
  • In your enquiry, list each opening separately with its own size and choice.

A house looks put together when its doors, windows and chaukhats share a few things. That does not mean every door must be the same. It means a few clear choices, repeated where people can see them, and freedom everywhere else.

Walk through the house first

Walk the way you and your guests will walk: from the gate, through the main door, into the drawing room, and along the passage to the bedrooms. Note which doors and windows you can see at the same time. These are the places where matching matters most. A store room door that nobody sees from the hall matters less.

Pick a few things to keep common

Choose two or three of these and use them across the house:

  • Polish shade. The easiest way to make everything look like one set.
  • Panel style. For example, square panels throughout, or straight vertical lines throughout.
  • Hardware colour. All steel, all brass or all black.
  • Top line. Doors and windows ending at the same height.
  • Chaukhat and window frame finish. The same shade as the doors.

The photos with this note show the same square panel design with round carving on different doors. Even with different layouts, they clearly belong to one house.

Let some things be different

  • The main door can be grander: carved, double, or in a costlier wood. Room doors can be simpler versions of the same style.
  • Bathroom and store doors can be plainer still.
  • Doors open to sun and rain may need a different coating from doors inside. Keep the shade close, even if the coating is different.

If you use different woods

To manage the budget, you can use a costlier wood for the main door and a lower-cost wood for the room doors. Forest teak costs more than imported teak, and imported teak costs more than plantation teak. Keep in mind:

  • Different woods have different natural colour and grain, and take polish differently. The same polish can look lighter or darker on each.
  • Natural wood also varies from piece to piece, even within one type.
  • Ask to see polish samples on each wood you plan to use before you fix the shade.

Our guide to choosing wood explains what to check in each wood.

Make a room-by-room list

Before collecting lots of photos, make a simple list with one line for each opening. Here is an example layout. Your items and sizes will be different.

WhereItemSize (H × W)TypeWoodQty
Main doorDoor and chaukhat8 ft × 4 ftDouble, with jali doorForest teak1
BedroomsDoor7 ft × 3 ftSinglePlantation teak3

Add the polish shade and a design photo for each line. Each opening keeps its own size and choice. A shared look does not mean every door has the same size or price. Send the list with one or two photos of the look you want, and we can go through it together.

Remember this

Keep a few choices common across the house, then list the size and selection for each opening separately.

Questions people ask

Do all the doors in a house need to be the same wood?

No. You can use different woods, for example a costlier teak for the main door. Ask for polish samples on each wood so the shades match well.

Can I order doors, chaukhats and windows together?

Yes. Send one list with each opening on its own line, and we can discuss them all together.
