Which wood should you choose?
These are the six woods we work with. Ask us and we will tell you honestly what suits your door, chaukhat or window.
Plantation teak
Real teak, grown on managed plantations. Lighter in colour, easy to work and good value. Check for heartwood and proper seasoning.

Forest teak
Teak from forest areas, bought through forest corporation (Nigam) auctions. Dense, deep-coloured and our most premium door wood. Ask for the lot papers.

Imported teak
Teak grown in Africa and shipped to India. Good colour and strength, priced between plantation and forest teak. Make sure it is true teak.

Desi sal
The traditional chaukhat wood of north India. Very hard and heavy. It must be well seasoned, or it can crack and twist.

Kapoor sal
Reddish, straight-grained hardwood, popular for chaukhat. It is not the same tree as Indian sal; check seasoning and finished size.

Once the size and design are final, our carpenters make it. Pay at least 50% before dispatch.

Solid wood, joined piece by piece.
A NordWood panelled door is made from solid wood sides, crosspieces and panels. The wider panels are formed from wooden planks joined together. Here is how those pieces fit to make the door you see.
- 1Solid wood sidesThe two full-height side pieces are called stiles. They form the sides of the door, with the hinges fitted on one side and the lock fitted on the other.
- 2Solid wood crosspiecesThe horizontal pieces are called rails. They connect the two sides at the top, bottom and between panels, forming the framework of the door shutter.
- 3Panels made from joined planksSolid wood planks are joined edge to edge to form each wider panel. These panels fill the spaces between the stiles and rails and form part of the visible door face.
- 4Fitted joints and wooden pinsTongue-and-groove joints fit a shaped wooden tongue into a matching groove. Wood adhesive bonds the joined surfaces, and wooden pins are used to secure joints in the assembly.

Grain and colour vary from piece to piece. Solid wood also responds to changes in humidity, so timber preparation, joint design and fitting all matter.

Separate the parts to see the solid wood stiles, rails and panels. Look closer at a panel to see how individual planks join to make its width.
A tongue fits into a groove.
The shaped edge of one piece fits into a matching recess in the next. NordWood uses tongue-and-groove joints, wood adhesive and wooden pins in its door assembly.

Simplified assembly illustration. Joint profiles, pin positions and proportions depend on the door design. The chaukhat is the separate frame fixed into the wall; this shows the door shutter that opens and closes within it.

What measurements should I send?
Height × width of each opening, how many pieces, and single or double door. Say if you are using feet or inches. Get the final size checked by your mistri or contractor before ordering. No size yet? You can still ask for a rough price.
Is fitting free? Do you deliver?
Fitting is free for doors and windows. Chaukhat and window frames are usually fixed by your construction workers; we can do it for a small charge. We deliver in our own vehicle across Lucknow and nearby areas, including unloading and upper floors. Delivery charge is quoted with your order.
Can I see the wood before I order?
Yes, please do. Come to our workshop in Daliganj, Lucknow and see the actual wood. Call once before you come so the right person is there.
